February marks the anniversary when in 1937 the Abraham Lincoln Brigade formed. The brigade was a group of almost 3000 American volunteers who went to Spain and fought the fascist sympathizers backed by Hitler and Mussolini in the Spanish Civil war. They came from all walks of life, they were socialists, anarchists, communists, unionists, Hispanic, black and white.
They were most likely the first American military unit who were commanded by a black officer, and suffered over 1,000 casualties.
They are also never recognized as American heroes. Just Reds or Anarchist rabble.
Time for that to change.
